Moray Integration Joint Board (IJB) is urging those eligible to take up the offer of their flu and COVID-19 vaccines as soon as possible to ensure they’re protected ahead of the festive season.

During the colder winter months when people stay indoors for longer and mix in larger groups, there is an increase in the number of people experiencing coughs, colds and flu or COVID-19-like illnesses.

Last winter in Scotland, hospital admissions for flu and COVID-19 peaked on Christmas Day (1,334 admissions) and New Year’s Day (452 admissions) respectively.

It was reported to yesterday’s (Thursday 30 November) meeting of the IJB that Grampian is above the Scottish average for winter vaccinations. As of 31 October 2023, NHS Grampian had delivered 606,933 COVID-19 and flu vaccinations.

Dennis Robertson, chair of the Moray IJB, said: “Nobody wants to miss out on the festive celebrations with their friends and family this winter and the vaccines provide the best possible protection. We strongly encourage everyone in Moray who is eligible to take up the vaccination offer now – don’t put it off any longer.”

Simon Bokor-Ingram, Chief Officer of Health & Social Care Moray, said: “Both flu and COVID-19 can be serious. The flu virus is always changing and protection from the COVID-19 vaccine fades over time. If you’re eligible, please come forward and get your jabs as soon as possible to make sure you have the best protection against these viruses.”

Those who are most at risk from flu and COVID-19 are invited for vaccination this winter, including people who are older, are pregnant, have an underlying health condition, provide vital face-to-face care for someone or who work in certain roles.

Colleagues working in health and social care are reminded they can book appointments at local staff only and community clinics. The Fiona Elcock Vaccination Centre in Elgin also offers staff the opportunity to drop in for their vaccinations. They should ensure they bring their staff ID badge with them.
