Health & Social Care Moray (HSCM) is supporting the Moray Champions Board to lead local celebrations recognising the achievements of care experienced young people.

To mark National Care Leavers Week which started yesterday (Monday 28 October), young people who come together as the Moray Champions Board are hosting a community event which will be held on Friday 1 November at Winchester House in Elginโ€™s King Street.

Running between 1pm and 4pm, the open afternoon will feature presentations highlighting the progress of the Champions Board and recognising the achievements of its members. There will be a host of free activities for everyone to enjoy, including the chance to try out a virtual reality headset and games console, pampering and relaxation sessions. Food and drink will also be available.

This yearโ€™s national theme is โ€œAll of Us, We are Oneโ€ to highlight the importance of community and the connection between care leavers themselves and supporting adults.

The Champions Board provides a forum for care experienced young people to come together to share views, stories and experiences with the aim of creating positive change in Moray. Itโ€™s supported by HSCM and other corporate parent agencies which have collective responsibility to uphold the rights and safeguard the wellbeing of looked after children and care leavers.

Jim Lyon, Interim Chief Social Work Officer for Moray, is looking forward to attending the event. He said: โ€œCare Leavers Week provides a great opportunity for us to celebrate our inspirational children and young people and recognise their achievements.

โ€œAll children and young people in Moray should have the chance to grow and thrive. They should have high aspirations and be supported to achieve them.

โ€œWe recognise that young people who are, or have been looked after, can face greater challenges with life skills, support networks, relationships, education, employment and housing, all of which can impact on their personal development, health and wellbeing. Itโ€™s important for us to reflect on the work we do as corporate parents and consider how we can continue to improve this by putting the voices and experiences of our children and young people at the heart of everything we do.โ€
