Moray residents are urged to stay alert to vulnerable adults in their community who may be at risk of harm, and to act on their concerns.

โ€‹In the lead-up to Adult Support and Protection Day on Thursday (20 February 2025), Morayโ€™s Adult Protection Committee is working with partners in public services, voluntary organisations and the community to raise awareness of the risk of financial harm.

This type of harm can involve theft, fraud and undue pressure to sign over property or withdraw money. It also relates to rogue traders, online scammers and misuse of benefits. It can happen anywhere – at home, at work, in public spaces, or even in places of care, like care homes, hospitals and day centres.

Some people are more vulnerable to financial harm due to factors like ill health, trauma, disability and frailty.

Fred McBride, independent convenor of the Moray Adult Protection Committee, has written to community groups and Third Sector partners seeking support to promote the message that everyone has a role in looking out for people who may not be able to safeguard themselves.

โ€œSadly, every year many adults in our communities face harm or abuse. Itโ€™s often caused by the people they trust to look out for them and their best interests, but who may be looking to take advantage of their vulnerabilities for their own financial gain.

โ€œOur communities should be places where everyone feels safe and secure and we all have a responsibility to protect one another from harm and speak up about any concerns we have. This helps ensure anyone who is at risk of harm is able to access the support they need.โ€

If youโ€™re worried that someone may be at risk of harm or neglect, itโ€™s right to trust your instincts and have it checked out.

โ€‹Public protection services in Moray are delivered through a multi-agency partnership including Health & Social Care Moray (HSCM), NHS Grampian and Police Scotland. Last year, the partnership received a very positive report from the Care Inspectorate after evidencing substantial improvement in supporting and protecting adults at risk of harm.
