Community members came together on Friday (25 July) for a joy-filled celebration of the 20th anniversary of Morayโs Be Active Life Long (BALL) health and wellbeing groups.
Nearly 300 people gathered in the coastal village of Hopeman for the milestone event which recognised two decades of friendship, physical activity, and support for healthy ageing across Moray.
BALL groups were developed through extensive community engagement with older people, who identified a need for more opportunities to stay physically active and socially connected later in life.
From the first group of just 10 participants in 2005, the BALL movement – which is unique to Moray – has grown into a vibrant network of 18 user-led groups welcoming more than 1,000 attendees each week.
BALL groups offer a wider range of activities designed to promote mental and physical wellbeing for people aged 50 and over. From gentle strength, balance and mobility-boosting activities to social outings, creative workshops, and guest speakers, the groups provide accessible, enjoyable ways for people to stay active, connected, and independent for longer.
Supported by Health & Social Care Moray (HSCM) Communities and Volunteering Team and the BALL Forum, the groups continue to be run by and for local people and remain a great example of community-led wellbeing in action.
The anniversary event was a celebration of the journey so far, with the day filled with music, movement, and shared memories. Group members from across Moray enjoyed activities including painting, crafts, movement and dance, drumming, music, and guided walks on the beach.
Speaking at the event, Sean Coady, Deputy Chief Officer and Head of Service for Health, said: โWe work closely with communities to explore opportunities that help people to stay healthy, happy, and independent for as long as possible. The BALL groups are a fantastic example of health and wellbeing self-management in action, and it was great to be part of their 20th anniversary celebrations.โ
The Lord Lieutenant of Moray, Air Commodore Alistair Monkman CBE, was was among the guests andย congratulated the BALL groups for their ongoing contribution to community wellbeing.
